It was still too cool and wet and muddy outside, so it was easy enough to ask the bar for a room just for the afternoon, that would be suitable for fighting in.

... After clarifying that it was for teaching fighting, she finally did give them a key to a room that was bare except for two chairs in one corner, with mats on the bare floor, and one mirrored wall.

This should work well, as Wellard and Duo enter.

Wellard shrugs, standing up.

"Nothing formal. Despite what the officers would like, there tends to be plenty of fighting in the midshipmen's mess." Wryly. "Along with plenty of 'I fell' excuses afterwards. However, since you did learn from it, that is probably why they turned a blind eye to it, as long as it didn't get too bad."

His lips twitch in amusement. "And I did manage to stay alive until I got shot, though I'd be willing to bet that luck had a hand in a lot of it."

"Ain't nothing wrong with luck, but you can't always count on it. So. First thing we're gonna do is teach you how to fall."

Duo walks up to Wellard, and then promptly grabs one of his arms, and trips him flat on his back.

"I try not to rely on lu-- hey!"

From on the floor, Wellard glares up at Duo. There is no use arguing that 'this isn't fair'- since fighting is not, and that is what Duo is supposed to be teaching him-

So Wellard aims a kick at one of Duo's knees.

Duo lets him go and hops backward, snickering. "Nice try. You've got the right idea, anyway. Never just stop. Don't give someone a rest 'cause they wanna chat, or 'cause you just hit 'em. If you just hit, do it again. If they're down, kick 'em in the head."

He does not offer Wellard a hand up, because he's pretty sure that would land him on the floor.

Oh, that move certainly would, Duo. The glare Wellard is giving Duo tinges with some amusement, as he gets up onto his feet quickly.

"Right, then." Even as he moves in towards Duo. "So noted."



They will take a break when Duo finally hits the mats himself.

Wellard is not as fast or as well trained as Duo. But they are not fighting to hurt each other, and Duo's main hand-to-hand weakness is being grabbed or pinned.

So when Wellard gets the grab and throw, Duo goes with it, and rolls through it. He wipes a hand across his forehead and grins.

"That's how you fall. Good throw, though. Use your shoulders and knees more. I'm not heavy, but you'll throw out your back trying to toss someone bigger than you."

Duo claps Wellard's shoulder. "Now, lemme see you make a fist."

"So- I don't bother trying to toss someone bigger than me." Wryly, with a ready step back from Duo.

Wellard learns quickly enough that he will not let Duo get a jump on him just because he is talking.

Besides, it is not like he does not know how to make a fist properly.

"Oh, no. It's a handy way to take down someone who doesn't expect it. Just- don't try it if they're just standing there. For someone big, when you don't have much training, use their momentum against 'em."

He nods in approval. "Good. You won't break your thumb punching someone like that. But tell me, where do you want to punch someone, if you wanna take 'em down fast and hard?"

He shakes his head ruefully. "I learned that after my first week on board ship."

"And as for that-" Wellard blinks. "Face, more than likely. Rather depends on the circumstances."

"Face is good. Circumstances are a crazy murderer that you want to stop no matter what. Better to cut him down to size and do your time knowing that everyone is safe. Eyes are especially good."

Duo demonstrates the right hand position and motion to, well. Basically reduce someone to one eye.

"Throat is also good. If someone can't breathe, they can't fight. Same goes for a shot right above the gut, right below the ribs."

A bit of a grimance at the eye thing, but Wellard does nod.

"Anything goes. ... Rather the same in a battle, really."

Where and when you are makes no difference when fighting to keep yourself and other's alive.

"Fighting someone like this is a battle. You are your own weapon, got it? There's time to consider what you're doing to someone when you're...in a bar brawl. Or just trying to subdue. But when you're face to face with someone that fucked up, no quarter."

Duo smirks. "Hitting below the belt, and I do mean literally."

He snorts.

What, Duo thinks that is a modern idea?

Wellard just rolls his eyes and nods.

Hey, Wellard called him sir at first. We have to be sure about things.

"Though I'd appreciate it if you don't practice everything I preach today. I like my eyes, and being able to walk. Which brings me to knees."

Duo mentions several more areas that are useful for taking someone down quick and hard. There are demonstrations. Both of them acquire a few bruises, but Duo is sure Wellard has picked up at least a few good tricks that will keep him and the girl safer.
