OOM: Pearl Repairs

The sky is cool, grey, and occasionally misting, but that just means when you are working hard you can keep warm enough.

And there is certainly plenty of work to be done. The deck of the Black Pearl has been cleared off, with debris and pieces that are large enough to reuse stacked carefully. All over is the gleam of cut and exposed wood, the splintered edges cut and smoothed in preparation for patching sections. One mast has been cleared of charred and torn sails and rigging, the canvas and rope set in one area to work on before it can be sent back up.

One of the current priorities, however, is fixing the stern section of the ship, the back wall of the captain's cabin, that took some of the worse damage from the kraken-

Scottish autumn nights can start to get chilly, afterall.

Party thread style, slowtimes more than welcome.

Wellard's lips quirk in an odd sort of humorless smile, and he gives Inigo a nod.

"Henry Wellard, formerly of His Majesty's Ship the Renown, late of the West Indies, 1802."

Inigo doesn't react outwardly to Wellard's attitude, save for his own cheerful look fading into neutrality.

"You are from a later time than me, then. And English?"

Jack looks pleased, even as he runs a hand over the wall by the latticework in an absent, familiar caress.

"I'll let you set to it, then."

"People don't get a lot of things," Jack advises him, just as dryly as before. "It's a thing what's worth keeping in mind."

[identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Quite, yes." Wellard nods carefully.

"A time when we are currently at war with France and Spain-

"At least when I was there."

[identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Wellard is already climbing down the last of the rat-lines- Down is always easier than up, particularly when you can skip the last section and drop down to the deck itself.

"Are you two alright?"

Kaylee stoops. Picks up a handsaw.

Says, over her shoulder, "Could paint the latticework purple."

Grin just a little teasing.

After a few seconds' silence, a lone casket rolls unharmed from under the heap of sailcloth and black feathers.

It's eventually followed by a hand.

"I'm okay!"
pirate_jack: (are you sure you want to do that?)

[personal profile] pirate_jack 2006-09-25 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
He looks up from the oilcloth that he's currently unrolling to give her a rather baleful look -- or at least it would be, if there wasn't wicked amusement glittering in his eyes.

"Luv, she's the Black Pearl-- not the Purple Pearl, savvy?"

A beat, and he gestures at his hair.

"Not that there's a thing wrong with a bit of pretty color, but not on me ship like that."

Archie's up on the main deck, catching a bit of fresh air before plunging back into the depts of the gundeck. And so, he's sitting on one of the intact bits of railing, sleeves still rolled up, looking out over the lake, trying to decide what he wants to tackle next. Company is more than welcome.

"Oh, I do," he reassures him, cheerful, as he plucks at one loop with an oddly delicate motion before starting to unwind the knot. "If I didn't I'd never get any work done. You got anything sharp down there you could toss up?"

[identity profile] seeks-sixfinger.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah."

The attitude is a bit more understandable, now.

"There is no love lost between England and Spain in my time, either," he says. "But then, I have no more allegience to the Spanish armada than to any other country's."

From his location on the quarterdeck, Jack gives a half-wave, then hastily supports the sail that had gone slipping in his moment of inattention.

Kaylee shakes her head sadly. "You're the boss."

And, grinning, she turns back to work.

[identity profile] prone-to-panic.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 02:06 am (UTC)(link)

Archie turns about and slips off the rail, heading up to give Jack a hand.

"Afternoon, captain. how are things going up here then? Aside from dropping bits of canvas?"

[identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wellard takes a deep breath, and starts sorting through the pile of wood.

"... wasn't so much the Spanish navy, as a group of privateers and a fort in the West Indies. However-"

He shakes his head.
pirate_jack: (now that's interesting)

[personal profile] pirate_jack 2006-09-25 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Mmph, mmph mmmmmmf." Jack finds a way to brace the sailcloth, then takes the needle and oiled silk from his mouth.

"Going rather well, I think." He eyes the seam that he's been working on thoughtfully. "Harder to sew than a woman's dress, but more useful."

[identity profile] prone-to-panic.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)

"I've never tried sewing a woman's dress, so I wouldn't know really."

He's had to mend his own shirts often enough to prove he can sew better than Svava can though.

"Though the idea of a ship with sails made entirely of petticoats is rather amusing."

[personal profile] pirate_jack 2006-09-25 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
This earns him a rather curious stare.

"... you're wanting me to throw something sharp at you, mate?"
pirate_jack: (once upon a time in singapore)

[personal profile] pirate_jack 2006-09-25 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Not strong enough," Jack tells him absently. "Tear too easily."
mercurialist: (yes?)

[personal profile] mercurialist 2006-09-25 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
An eyebrow.

Actually, more like an Eyebrow.

"Yes?"

Mercer holds up the knot and wiggles it to punctuate.

[identity profile] prone-to-panic.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 02:25 am (UTC)(link)

Archie snorts softly.

"I said amusing, not particularly practical."

He glances around with a practiced eye.

"Things do seem to be coming along nicely."

Jack shrugs.

"As you'd have it, then."

In one swift movement, he's pulled a knife from his boot and sent it spinning through the air, straight at Mercer's shoulder-- or the mast behind it.s
