[After this rather.]

Black outs are not too affecting, if one is rather used to candles and oil lamps, even still. Or when one was in bed already, having been busy working on getting some of the frame work for the hull done the day before-

So, a few things were missed, last evening.

But today, Wellard is heading back out to the small ship yard, to resume work-

...

That was hardly on the lake yesterday. He certainly knows that ship well enough, as he spent quite some time on board not too long ago. So, it is just a few moments later that Wellard is on the shore line closest to the Pearl, hands cupped around his mouth.

"Captain Sparrow!"

It doesn't take too long. A familiar figure can be seen passing by the gunports-- and some other holes as well -- as Jack makes his way up from belowdecks.

"The very same! Good to see you, lad," he calls back, leaning over the rail with a grin.

"You did find your way back to Milliways! We knew you would- just never expected you to bring the whole ship with you as well!"

-Or maybe not quite the whole ship. With being closer, and some attention on it as well-

Not quite the whole ship. Wellard's smile fades to a look of concern, as he shades his eyes from the sun.

"-What happened?"

"Couldn't leave her behind, son."

Jack's still grinning, but there's something of an odd quiet about him as he says this.

"Never could even think it, aye? Not me Pearl-- especially now."

He leans a little further out, nodding down at some of the damage.

"Too much work to be done on her for me to go gallivanting off and let her wait, savvy?"

Wellard nods slowly, finally looking from Jack to the Pearl again, studying the damage that can be seen from his view.

"I've got tools and supplies." Biting his lip as he thinks. "We could see about fixing her, then."

"I'll not say I can't use the help," Jack tells him. "But first off, we'd need to see about finding you a way from over there--"

This is said with an elaborately grand, sweeping gesture.

"-- to here." A beat. "'Fraid I've lost all me boats."

Wellard smiles wryly, and eyes the lake.

"... With the shark in the lake, I would not think this is the time for me to be learning how to swim. Caspian has a boat, but-"

One does not quite 'borrow' ships from friends, at least if you are staying in the same place as your friends.

"And the one I'm working on isn't even close to beign moveable, yet." He sighs, thinking.

"A raft shouldn't be too hard?"

Jack gives him a very odd look.

"Lad, you're the second person now to tell me that there's a shark in this lake."

"Because there rather is." Wellard eyes Jack with a wry smile.

"Considering such things as sea serpents and waterhorses and other things- A shark in a lake isn't that odd. And this is Milliways."

This is Milliways, indeed.

And as such, fortuitous timing is the norm rather than the exception.

Which is why a fin, vast and bone-white, breaks the surface of the lake not far from the Pearl just as Wellard finishes speaking.

It draws closer, slowly, circling.

Waiting.

Hungry.

Jack stares at the fin-- the rather unnaturally large fin -- in silence for several long seconds.

"Another sea beastie. That's very interesting."

Black eyes are glittering with feral challenge.

For all being a former officer in His Magesty's Navy, and then a pirate for a while on board the Pearl, Wellard still rather has a good 'I told you so' smug look.

(This may be due to Mary, really.)

"-I'll see about a raft quick enough, then? Surely I can get some crates from the bar."

pirate_jack: (now that's interesting)

He's watching the fin, not Wellard, but as it heads out toward the middle of the lake and sinks from view, Jack shakes his head and turns back.

"Might be a good idea at that, lad."

Not that any raft ever made would stop a shark that size from making a quick bite of the contents, but it's better than nothing.

With a wry nod to Jack, Wellard heads quickly back to the bar.

They are not stranded on a desert isle, with perhaps only crates of tea to build with. (http://community.livejournal.com/milliways_bar/13895404.html?thread=571176172#t571176172) There are quite more supplies at hand, and proper tools-

Thus, a couple hours later, Wellard eyes the raft floating in the shallows a couple feet out past the waterline, with a mooring rope looped over a nearby boulder. Should be lake-worthy enough, so with a deep breath and philosophical shrug (and an oar), he undoes the mooring and carefully heads out towards the Pearl.

During all this, he's been moving back and forth on the deck, piling up all the scrap and wreckage in one place-- but keeping an eye on Wellard's progress, as well.

As the lad sets out, Jack comes to the port rail and leans over, watching with interest.

Wellard ties the raft to the sea ladder, before climbing it up aboard the Pearl. "You're not too far out from shore. I can see about a couple pieces of rope, so the raft can be pulled back and forth as needed, as long as neither side looses their end."

A deep breath, and he takes a long look around the deck...

Then back to Jack.

Very, very dryly, Jack tells him,

"Rope, I have."

He gestures grandly around the Pearl, where fallen rigging and a torn cargo net are stretched out piece by piece.

"... Jack? What happened?"

"Ran afoul of a terrible beastie," he says simply.

"Rather didn't look like damage from cannons, much." He mutters.

"Is that how you got here, then? With the Pearl?"

"Had a bit of help," Jack admits, with a slight grin. "She's a bit hard to pull along all by me onesies."

From: [identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com
Which is a little too roundabout for Wellard to make sense of. He blinks at Jack, and decides not to press.

"... ah, quite. Um." Another glance around at the damage apparent from just on deck.

"Should we see about what's needed to start fixing her up, then?"

There is no question as to helping or not- the 'we' was never in doubt in Wellard's mind.

His lips twitch in a faint smile.

"Thank you. And its... its good to see you again, sir."

It is too late to say he wishes the circumstances could have been different.

pirate_jack: (are you sure you want to do that?)
From: [personal profile] pirate_jack
There's a beat of silence between them, and then Jack flashes a grin.

"You might not think so when I tell you all your stored barrels of dye are gone now, savvy? And that's just the start of it."

Date: 2006-08-29 04:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com
"I think I would have been rather surprised if they had." Wellard chuckles, shaking his head. "So its quite alright-

"Though what did happen to them, then?"
