Now that he has gotten better, Wellard has started going back outside again. He had found his long coat inside his sea-chest, its been needed as the weather turned away from winter and toward winter.

One can only read so much, particularly when the usual pattern of their life had been mostly work and action.

Archie is outside as well, as he usually is at this hour. Today though he is not studying, today he's got his sword out and is going through the drills that Alanna has shown him along with those remembered from his more formal training as a youth.

Which does cause Wellard to pause, and watch.

... Swords practice was nothing quite like that exactly back on board the Renown- though he has been learning that such is the case with many things here.

No, sword work on the Renown was mostly utilitarian, whatever it takes to keep one alive. This is much more like a dance, an extremely dangerous dance. He cycles through the movements slowly a few times and then speeds it up o the sort of pace that would be needed in real combat. turning, parying, thrusting, spinning, the blade flashes in the chill air. It takes Archie's full concentration until he pauses between drills and spots the lad. He smiles.

"Well, you're certainly looking better than last time I saw you, Mr Wellard. How are you faring?"

"Better, I do believe, Mister Kennedy. Thank you." He nods, smiling faintly.

"The- the sword work you were doing just now. You learned that here, then? It- its not like what anyone used, that I recall, sir"

"Some of it is what I learned as a boy from my brothers' fencing master, some I learned here, as you say, from the Lady Alanna whi is a knight on her world."

He sheathes his sabre and bends to take up his jacket, even in this weather, it is possible to work yourself warm. He smiles at Wellard as he puts it back on, and sits down on the boulder it was resting on.

"I'm glad to hear it, lad. You had us concerned there for a bit."

"I think I would have been concerned, if I knew what was happening at that time." A bit wryly, and a nod.

"Though- I don't think I've thanked you, Mister Kennedy. For helping me then."

He shakes his head slightly.

"No thanks needed, Mr Wellard. I told you I'd do my best to see that you are alright, and I meant it. You are a good lad, you didn't deserve any of the lot that was handed to you there."

"I... I am learning so." Carefully, eyes down. "I-"

"It never any use to wish the past was different, sir."

"Perhaps you are right, Mr Wellard. It takes a very wise person to heed that advice though."

He pats the younger man on the shoulder companionably.

"What have you been doing with yourself then?"

"... Not much, I'm afraid. I've gotten a better book about navigation from the bar, at least." He shrugs, slightly.

He considers this for a moment.

"I suppose I didn't really do a lot when I first got here either. It was actually until I met Svava that I even learned that all this was out here. The more time youare here, the more people you meet, the more you'll find your time occupied by them, I assure you. Though, in the mean time, study is always a good use of time, I expect."

"Even if knowing navigation is of little use here." Wryly, with a nod to Archie.

"And... I didn't quite have much of a chance to meet anyone before, really." He glances back to the bar, biting his lip.

"Perhaps, perhaps not. Knowledge can generally find somesort of use."

He pats his shoulder heartily.

"Don't worrk about it, lad. There's plenty of time for all that. I'm sure you'll be making up fot lost time soon enough."

"I never really quite had time before, sir." Wellard smiles a bit wryly, then looks out over the lake.

"Enough of it lost, that I'm still not quite sure what to do with myself."

Archie follows his gaze out across the hoizon sighing, his own eyes wistful.

"Well... we have all the time in the world now, don't we?"

From: [identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com
"Yes, sir. And it is ours, at least? To choose what we wish to do, and so on?"

He blinks, and looks at Archie.

"... Did you have family left behind, Mister Kennedy? Or- or other people, to be worried about?"

Archie looks down, fiddling with the cuff of his jacket.

"Horatio was more of a brother to me than any of my true brothers were. And my father most likely would have disowned me if I hadn't died."

"Lt. Hornblower." Wellard nods, quiet. Still looking out over the lake.

There really is not anything he can add to answer his own question, there.

As Wellard's superior officer, he had rather known a bit about his circumstances when he came aboard. He continues to stare out across the lake.

"You really ought to meet my fiancee."

The leap in logic really does make sense to him.

No friends, no family, as it was once summed up between the lieutenants.

Well, speaking about family- the logic also makes sense. Wellard blinks, and nods. "I- I haven't yet. You and Jason both have mentioned her."

Archie beams.

"She's lovely."

There's a reason she's his fiancee.

Wellard smiles faintly. "I would imagine so, sir."

"Sometimes I still can't quite believe my luck."

A thought occurs to him, and the thought becomes a Plan, and the Plan quickly become something that he will refer to in the future ans 'Operation Get Wellard a Girl'.

From: [identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com

If Wellard knew of this plan, he would make a swift and timely retreat. If he knew of what the muns just discussed, he would run screaming.

Alas, he is Oblivious, and nods to Archie.

"... Maybe this place is to make up for things before, Mister Kennedy."

From: [identity profile] prone-to-panic.livejournal.com

This would be the sound of the muns cackling evily madly.

"That seems to be the popular theory, Mr Wellard. And I, for one, am glad of it."

From: [identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com
"... I certainly can find no reason to argue with it, at least." He nods slowly, looking back to the lake.

"Even if this place takes some getting use to."

From: [identity profile] prone-to-panic.livejournal.com

Archie laughs at this, and it is a good sound.

"It certainly does take some getting used to."

He pauses, sobering a little.

"When I first got here, I was so afraid that someone was going to come up to me and tell me that a mistake had been made, that I didn't deserve all this."

Date: 2005-11-28 07:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com
That idea does cause him to pale slightly, looking back at Archie worriedly.

"... That sort of thing hasn't ever happened though- has it, sir?"

He shakes his head.

"There was a few that went to their final peace not terribly long ago, but they went of their own accord. Not that it was any less difficult for their friends and adopted families here."
