Laini on Jamie, Wellard on Mary, OR Wellard on Jamie. You have a choice! *generous*

Mary: Weeee. In some ways they have very similar backgrounds- immediate family gone, sent to live with a distant relative they never knew before.

However, if it weren't for the fact that Mary is 1)much younger than him, and 2) a girl, she'd walk all over him. He does realize that she's much more stronger and stubborn and resolute than he can be, and he rather admires her for it. That said- he's still able to put his foot down to her when needed. (And even that's been pretty rare.) He's also resigned to the fact that Mary is going to look for answers on nearly anything, so it's prolly for the best to let her and make sure she has access to what she needs to find those answers. Wellard... just doesn't want her to learn about some things the hard way, such as killing people, or other situations where she can get hurt. Learning things academically- fine. He also wants to do his best to protect her as well.

Jamie: It amuses me that Wellard still sometimes forms his impressions of people based on how they would have done in the Navy. Jamie would have been one of those midshipmen who ended up in a lot of fights with other middies because he couldn't keep his mouth shut, alas. Given that Wellard has liked him so far- he prolly would have joined in on those fights to try to keep Jamie from getting too hurt. (And then also harassed him about keeping his mouth shut, afterwards.)

(Change that around from "in the navy" to "on a pirate ship", and I rather think the same would have happened.)

He does think Jamie is normal (for a given value)- people at Milliways do come from odd worlds and backgrounds, so such things as Jamie speaking Russian he hardly gives a second thought to.

Jamie: Peas in a pod. Smart asses, both of them, with smart alec answers and back talk and funny answers and making stuff up and defecting any and all seriousness...

Which may be why she'll ask him straight questions at times and want straight answers. Maybe she doesn't want him to get into it as much as she has- or at least figure out when to be serious and when to laugh and joke. *waves hands* Who knows. She lies, at times.

She likes him. She'll watch out for him, and thankfully knows when to step back and leave him be- kids can't grow when they're smothered- they need space to go on their own. Which works with Jamie! They just click- and she is better at being a 'big sister' and friend than a mother, really.

Wellard on Will, please and we need to actually thread at some point again.

We do!!

Will and Wellard are both from time periods where (even as teenagers) they're considered adults. Considering most other people in the bar are from more modern times where this isn't the case, its nice knowing someone young who certainly isn't going to think the same. That said- Wellard certainly thinks of Will as a Responsible Adult-

Except for the few times they're both just... so very teenage at each other. (Specially when it comes to girls. *amused*) And british.

The fun part of also being a Responsible Adult- he's figured out that something has happened to Will. Wellard... won't press. Because things do happen (see his own canon), and if someone doesn't want to bring it up, that is there business, and he's quite fine with it. I think it also adds to the 'considering-a-grownup', at least in the way of learning to not be a child anymore. *wry* Though I think both of them would agree that there certainly has to be nicer ways of accomplishing that.

Newer: Wellard about River, and Wellard about Piotr.

River: .... Well. Long ago he did ask Wash a bit about River. Wash didn't go into any details, but there was enough there that Wellard rather thinks she was tortured. Which... close enough, really. So, her not being all-that-sane is understandable. He doesn't think she's insane, if you can see the difference there. Just that she needs a bit more care and thought on his part, which he does his best when they talk. (I do love how she makes him think over exactly what both she's said and he himself has said.)

He does rather think of her as... delicate, which is usually emphasised by how she moves. I think his head will explode if/when he ever sees her fight. >_<

Piotr: OMG someone normal. Who's been through- well, not the EXACT SAME THING, but close enough. (How often does someone die and then come back? Marvel, don't answer that.) Even with all of that, it helps even more that Piotr is... normal. Normal, sane, unmagical, human- and dealing with it all as well. (And honestly, I don't think adding 'mutant' to the mix is going to change Wellard's thoughts on this matter.) That has helped Wellard a lot with the idea that he can manage and deal with it as well.

And also he's... normal. Piotr is someone Wellard could have met back in his own time and world. (Sorta.) He's also smart and educated, and not afraid to work with his hands, and personality-wise they just mesh so nicely.

Clearly this should happen! Because I am good and kind and polite to your characters and mine always.

Awwwww, Wellard, though. *hugs him* (And the not-all-that-sane vs insane distinction does definitely make sense.)

For River's attitude towards Wellard... hmm. I think she likes him. I think, in some ways, she sees him as -- delicate is the wrong word, although it would amuse me to be able to use it. But there are some people she thinks can handle learning about the weapon side of her without blinking (especially the ones who pick up on the very subtle clues to it), and some people she... is not that sure of. Which doesn't mean she actively works to hide it from him or anything like that, and if she had reason to be that around him she wouldn't hesitate, but I think she's not sure he'd take it well. So she's a little amused by his perception of her as a delicate girl who needs protection, since it hasn't come up in any annoying way so far, but she doesn't mind it.

But he's friendly and inquisitive into the world (but not prying) and likes to learn, and all of those are things that will endear you to River. Even if he doesn't always understand what she's saying. That last trait is a very common one, after all.

Wellard: *facePALM* *snicker* He'd prolly be able to deal with it! Just... well. River being able to fight will cause a lot more surprise and taken-aback-ness than Piotr going all metal. Which is very amusing. Milliways has taught Wellard to be able to adapt to new situations and facts quickly.

...Yeah, I will not answer the question of how often Marvel does that. *wry* But still! Yeah, all of that makes lots of sense.

Clearly we need to thread them more often. :D They meshed really well, those past couple of times, and I anticipate this continuing.

For two people with somewhat similar backgrounds (teenagers in war), they act so very normal around each other. Teasing, rough-housing- sparring practice with dirty tricks and B-and-E into churches to watch shuttles lift off. *L* Well, at least to them its normal, even if it isn't exactly a 'normal teenage' thing.

Wellard does trust Duo enough that he would tell him his background- well, at least the 'issues' part that he certainly doesn't tell everyone. Just that it's never come up, and there's been no reason to- and they're getting along just fine enough without him having to bring it up.

I think he does suspect that Duo also has a 'background'- but as I said, their friendship has worked so well without knowing it... Wellard doesn't think he needs to know it. And he knows Duo well enough that he'll continue to stand by him no matter what that background may be- just based on the Duo that Wellard knows now.
