After this.

Wellard shoved himself back from the front door, biting back anything further to say. He had not been there- And Finn had left for whatever fate held for him on the Longest Road- Which Wellard had his own, morbid ideas about.

He said he would take care of Dari, for Finn- And because he had not been here when Finn was, he failed that.

Jaw clenched, he turns on his heel and heads for the stairs.

Anywhere, just away.

Hannah saw him come in, and got up to say hello, but stopped short a moment ago.

Now she starts forward again.

"Hey, Henry. What's wrong?"

That manages to make him pause, one hand on the handrail of the stairs, and Wellard turns to look at Hannah.

He will not deny that something is wrong, but trying to say anything through hurt and guilt right now is difficult.

Hannah looks at him, for a moment, and then nods, slightly.

"OK, let's try a different question. Do you want company, or should I catch you another time?

"Choosing the first option doesn't mean you have to tell me what's wrong right now, but choosing the second doesn't mean that you get out of it all together, either."

His jaw clenches, and Wellard looks down at his hands for a long moment, before looking back up to Hannah.

"I don't know." Quietly. He glances to the door, frowning.

"I missed him. I said I would help and then I wasn't here, and now he's gone-" Wellard looks back to her, eyes bright.

"And I wasn't here to help like I said I would."

Hannah has no idea who or what he's talking about.

She doesn't know that she needs to, though, at this moment.

Sometimes there isn't anything to say, and in those times, well, it helps to not be the member of the relationship who is from 1802 and British.

Because Hannah just hugs him.

It is not so much being british and from 1802 (though those do not help much) that keep Wellard from seeking a hug. Losing his family and being raised by someone who saw Wellard more as a duty, that did far more in keeping him from showing emotions around anyone who was not a child, or human.

That said, once Hannah puts her arms around him- his arms are around her and he is not letting go.

Touch is a second language for them, always has been, with shades and depths of meanings they don't quite have the words for.

And there are rather a lot of words that just don't work here, like it's okay and it will be all right, because she doesn't know that it is or that it will be.

So instead she wraps her arms a little more tightly around him, and waits until he's ready to speak, or not.

It may be a long while before he is ready to speak.

It is certainly a long while before he lets Hannah go, taking a deep breath and reaching up to rub at his eyes.

To explain things or not, Wellard is still undecided. Getting 'away' is still in the plans, however-

And his hand is holding Hannah's as he starts back up the stairs again.

That is probably an answer as to if he wants company or not.

And a pretty clear one at that.

"So, where are we going, Henry?" she asks.

Because it's a little odd to be going up the stairs, rather than out the door.

That slows him down for a moment, before his shoulders twitch in a shrug. He had been planning on grabbing some things and heading out to the Pearl, but now...

"Not many places to really go, is there?" Muttered.

"Just... away, right now. Not as if I have to worry about missing Finn when he comes in to get me."

Hannah is quiet for a second, and the nod is more to herself than to him.

"OK. Away works, as a where, I guess."

She's not sure yet if she's supposed to ask who Finn is, and what Henry's talking about, or wait for him to get to it.

For the moment, she'll wait.

At the moment, away is up the stairs, and to his room (http://midshipwellard.livejournal.com/19531.html). The door is shoved open, and Wellard pauses before entering.

He does think to pull out the chair at his desk for Hannah, but then he staring out the window-

It is either that, or pacing.

Hannah puts her hands on the back of the chair, but doesn't sit down.

She counts to ten, and then thirty, before she says, "Henry, what's wrong?"

Vagueness can easily be answered by the same. Direct questions, however-

(Well, in the navy they had to be answered. Here, not so much, and some times he does not- But not when talking to friends.)

-will be answered, as soon as he can figure how. Wellard frowns, looking out the window, and takes a deep breath.

"A friend of mine... Finn, here at Milliways- he asked if I would help him with something, when the time came. I- I was out checking on the ship, and he came in looking for me, and...

"I missed him."

"OK," says Hannah, slowly, with another of those nods to herself.

She can see that he's upset. Very upset even. She just has no idea why.

"So . . . he'll find you next time, right? I don't . . . I don't think I understand why this appears to be a crisis."

From: [identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com
He at least knows that he is not explaining this well. Another deep breath, and Wellard closes his eyes.

"Finn is from a world named Fionavar. There is a war going on there, he's said, against the Dark. Then even aside from that, he was apparently chosen for some sort of... fate, but no one even knows what."

Wellard opens his eyes, and trails a fingertip down a pane of glass in the window.

"When the wandering fire strikes the heart of the stone-
Will you follow?
Will you leave your home?
Will you leave your life?
Will you take the Longest Road?

His lips twitch, and Wellard finally looks over to Hannah. "'The longest road' seems to me to be the one you do not return from. Finn probably thought that as well. He asked me, when it happened, if I would take care of his brother for him. He was to come and get me, before he left for whatever this fate was."

"God knows if he's ever going to come back."

"Oh," says Hannah, in the way people say "oh" when they don't really have anything else to say.

She sits down in the desk chair, and looks at her hands.

"So Finn, your friend, has been called to some unknown fate, and now his number is up, and so you were gonna go to another world and take care of his brother. I see.

"I'm sorry, then. That you missed him."

She looks up at him.

"When were you planning to tell me all that?"

"I wouldn't have been able to stay there." He bites his lip, then shakes his head. "I would have brought his brother back here, to-"

Wellard blinks.

"I wasn't going to be leaving Milliways."

Hannah looks away and then back at him. "You're missing the point, Henry, but this isn't the time for that . . . we'll talk about it later."

He can count on it.

"For now, let's talk about friend Finn. I assume you still would like to go get his brother. Is there another way into that world? Does anyone else from there come here, someone you could explain all this to and ask for help?"

From: [identity profile] politestpirate.livejournal.com
He is very much missing the point- Wellard just nods at that, a bit confusedly-

And then brightens slightly.

"A couple that I've met recently, who know Finn. When I see them next, they will hopefully know what happened, or at least can help me."

"You have a plan, then."

She looks at him, blue eyes steady on brown ones.

"Hey. This is not your fault. I mean, there is no fault here. You went out to the ship. That's all you did. You didn't do it to get out of the promise or anything like that. You just went out to the ship. That's all. That's all you did. Wrong place, wrong time. It's rotten luck, but it's not your fault."

Rotten Luck. Fate. Destiny.

Wellard would love to argue this. He should have been there, and he was not-

His jaw clenches, and he looks back to the window.

Hannah's right.

"Just last week he and I were looking over maps of our worlds, comparing them and talking." Quietly.

"It may not be my fault that I missed him, but... I didn't even get to say goodbye."

"Of course," she says.

She crosses the room to where he's standing, takes one of his hands in one of hers, and rests the other against his cheek.

"I'm right here, and I'll stay however long you want. You really don't even have to ask for that, you know."

He gives Hannah a faint, sad smile, and nods slowly.

"Thank you, though."

Wellard takes a deep, shaky breath that he hardly manages to complete, before pulling her closer and wrapping his arms around her.

It may not be his fault, true-

But that does not mean it hurts any less.

No. There's not much that makes losing a friend hurt less, except time.

And there's not much to say, except what they've said already or set aside for later.

Sometimes all you can do is hold someone, and let him hold you, and hope it does whatever good it can.
